Cumnor Cricket Club gets Olympic legacy

The money given to Cumnor is part of a £52m national fund

An Oxfordshire cricket club has received a cheque for £31,769 from an Olympic legacy fund.

Cumnor Cricket Club near Oxford was given the money in recognition of its work encouraging the community to take up the sport.

The money will be used to build a new three-bay cricket net facility.

Club chairman Roger Mitty said: "We are absolutely delighted and feel very privileged to be amongst the first to benefit."

He added: "This Olympic legacy funding will mark the beginning of a new phase in the club's three-year development plan.

"The new state-of-the-art facility will serve many hundreds of players and young people in the years to come."

The money comes from the Sport England's Inspired Facilities fund, which will be investing at least £52m in sports facilities around the country.

Every sports facility that receives funding will carry the London 2012 Inspire mark to celebrate its link to the Games.

Local MP Nicola Blackwood said the investment in the 150-year-old club was fantastic news.
