Oxford's Summertown redevelopment proposals

More shops and houses could be built in an area of Oxford if council proposals are approved.

Oxford City Council has earmarked a 3.7-acre (1.5-hectare) site off Banbury Road in Summertown for development.

The site at Diamond Place currently comprises of the University of Oxford's Ewert House, offices and two council-owned car parks.

The proposals form part of Oxford's draft local development plan.

Underground parking

Residents are meeting to discuss the proposals, with the intention of forming a neighbourhood forum and plan to ensure the council development will benefit the area.

The council said it needed to make "more efficient use of land".

It has suggested redeveloping the current car parks and creating underground parking to allay public concerns over the loss of spaces.

The site could also be used for childcare facilities and student accommodation.

The university intends to move its examination halls from Ewert House.

A planning application for the development proposals is yet to be submitted.
