Oxfordshire flood warning issued

Dozens of roads were left underwater

Oxfordshire residents have been warned to prepare for flooding as substantial rain is set to fall across the county.

A flood warning for the River Thames has been put in place between Buscot Wick to Shifford by the Environment Agency.

Oxfordshire County Council said it had delivered 3,500 sandbags where there was a risk of highway-related flooding.

The Met Office said the rain was expected to clear north of Banbury through the early hours of Sunday.

Strong winds, perhaps reaching gale force, were expected to last until dawn which could damage buildings and uproot trees, the Met Office said.

Sporting fixtures across the county were affected by the weather, including the FA Trophy tie between Oxford City and Bishop's Stortford.

The game was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

On Thursday night, 33 residents from a nursing home in Shipton-under-Wychwood were forced to leave after concerns about rising water levels in a nearby river.

The Mill Arts Centre at Banbury was also closed earlier in the week due to flooding.
