The winner of a competition to design a chair for the University of Oxford's Bodleian Libraries has been announced.

The winning design will be produced for the refurbished Weston Library, part of the Bodleian Libraries, which will reopen in October 2014.

Edward Barber OBE and Jay Osgerby OBE, who designed the London 2012 Olympic torch, worked with manufacturer Isokon Plus to produce the chair.

The winning design was chosen from a shortlist of three by a panel of judges and readers from the Bodleian Libraries.

It is the third time a seat has been specifically designed for the Bodleian since 1756, the first being the Windsor Chair, made for the curators of the library.

Weston Library designer Sir Gilbert Scott created two leather chairs in 1936 to furnish the building.

The final shortlisted entries will be displayed along with their predecessors at the V&A museum in London until 17 November.

The library said the new three-legged seat would join "an illustrious group of historic chairs that have supported readers over the centuries".
