Oxford tower blocks makeover gets go-ahead

An £18m project to refurbish five tower blocks in Oxford has been given the go-ahead.
Oxford City Council approved work on Evenlode Tower and Windrush Tower in Blackbird Leys, Foresters Tower in Wood Farm, Hockmore Tower in Cowley, and Plowmans Tower in Northway.
The towers, which were built in the 1960s, house about 700 residents.
The work involves enhancing the exteriors as well as adding insulation, new windows and heating systems.
All of the towers will have their balconies enclosed, with large glass windows to create a small conservatory space.
New fire safety system and parking and bin facilities are also part of the revamp.
The plans, external, which the council hopes will extend the lifespan of the towers, were approved by Oxford City Council's East area planning committee.
A contractor is expected to be appointed in December with work due to start in the middle of 2015.
