More than a month of construction work has begun at Oxford railway station to make it ready for a major new rail link.

Network Rail said there would be noise as tracks were installed, followed by the building of new platform space, until 11 December.

The line will directly connect Oxford and London via Marylebone.

The rail operator is setting up temporary noise barriers to reduce sound travelling from the site.

Route delivery director Graeme Tandy said: "We would like to thank residents for their patience as we undertake this upgrade work.

"It is essential that we complete the installation of track and the building of the platforms to allow Chiltern Railways to connect Oxford station to Marylebone, providing passengers with new services.

"We will do everything in our power to minimise noise and impact on local residents as this work takes place."

Two recently built railway stations in Oxfordshire, Oxford Parkway and Bicester Village, will also take passengers into London Marylebone via the new track.
