Election results: Lib Dems win Oxfordshire council from Tories

The Liberal Democrats have won control of Vale of White Horse District Council from the Conservatives.

They overturned a 20-seat Tory majority to turn the Oxfordshire council orange for the first time since 2007.

The Lib Dems also became the largest party on neighbouring South Oxfordshire District Council, where the Conservatives previously had an 18-seat majority.

The Greens picked up six seats, five in South Oxfordshire and one in the Vale.

In the Vale of White Horse, the Lib Dems now have a majority of 24 seats, and in South Oxfordshire no party has overall control.

Oxford West and Abingdon Liberal Democrat MP Layla Moran hailed what she called a "really good night" for the party.

She said: "I think what we've seen tonight is a clear indication that the Conservatives at a national and to a degree at a local level are being punished at the ballot box.

"Turnout wasn't as bad as we thought it might be even though there was quite a lot of apathy on the doorsteps.

"But overall I'm really proud of my team - this is a really good night for the Liberal Democrats."

South Oxfordshire now has 12 Lib Dems, 10 Conservatives, five Greens, three Labour, three independents and three Henley Residents Group councillors.

In West Oxfordshire, the Conservatives kept control of the district council despite losing five seats overall.

The Lib Dems gained two seats, while Labour made the biggest gains with four new councillors joining their benches.

The Tories also retained control of Cherwell District Council despite losing three seats; two to independent councillors and one to the Green Party.
