Residents were advised to keep windows closed because of an "unpleasant smell and a lot of smoke" after a fire broke out at a landfill site.
Firefighters were called to a site close to the Sutton Courtenay landfill near Didcot, Oxfordshire, at about 21:15 BST on Thursday.
Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service said 16 crews dealt with the fire. It was mostly out by 11:00 on Friday.
It is thought to have been accidental and no one was injured.
Crews from across the Thames Valley attended, including firefighters from Abingdon, Wallingford, Rewley Road in Oxford, Banbury, Wheatley and Carterton.
Police advised people to stay away from the area near Trident Park.
