A woman has died and two people including a one-year-old boy are critically injured following an incident in which a car crashed into a ditch beside a motorway.

Police said the victims' Nissan Qashqai left the M40 in Oxfordshire "at speed" just before 09:10 BST.

The motorway was shut northbound for more than five hours between junction 9 for Bicester and 10 for the A43.

An air ambulance and fire crews attended the scene.

Thames Valley Police said five people were in the car.

A woman aged in her 60s died at the scene while the boy and a woman aged in her 30s were critically injured.

Two others, a man aged in his 30s and a girl aged two, are also at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford.

Sgt Dominic Mahon said: "I am appealing to anybody who was driving on the M40 at around the time of this collision to please get in touch.

"Our thoughts are with all of those affected at this extremely difficult time."
