The planned closure was for repairs to Wolvercote Viaduct and works to re-waterproof the A34

Work that would have closed a section of the A34 near Oxford this weekend has been cancelled.

The road was due to have fully closed northbound for re-waterproofing and repairs to Wolvercote Viaduct.

It was the latest in a series of Friday-to-Monday closures that have seen hour-long queues for drivers.

However, National Highways said wet weather, including possible thundery showers on Sunday, mean the work was on hold.

The work was due to have closed the A34 northbound between the Peartree and Hinksey Hill Interchanges

In a statement, it said: "We need dry weather to carry out the waterproofing work we have been doing.

"We hope to complete the remaining waterproofing and surfacing works before 26 June.

"This may involve a further weekend closure but we will let people know in advance when that's likely to be. We may also still need another single night time closure to complete the road-marking works."

During the closure last weekend queues of more than an hour were reported around the Swinford Toll bridge as drivers diverted.
