Due to "additional resource", Sean Martell, of National Highways, said it was now hoped repair works on the A34 dual carriageway would be completed ahead of schedule in February instead of March.

"By installing the yellow boxes, I'm confident if there's compliance by most drivers we'll be able to keep the parts where people join that road free to allow people to get on and get off that," Mr Martell said.

"I also appreciate that's a particularly busy part of the network and we're in a busy part of the year.

"I think circumstances have caused it to be much more difficult than we have anticipated."

According to the Highway Code, external, you must not enter a yellow box junction until your exit road or lane is clear.

However, you can enter the box and wait when you want to turn right, and are only stopped from doing so by oncoming traffic or by other vehicles waiting to turn right.
