Oxford United said it had adjusted its stadium designs in response to a consultation

Oxford United has made changes to its new stadium designs in response to public feedback.

The club expected to submit a planning application for a new stadium at The Triangle, near Kidlington, before the end of 2023.

But reviews of submissions received during a consultation exercise meant the process has taken "slightly longer than anticipated".

The club said it was about "getting the right facility for everyone".

Last year Oxfordshire County Council agreed a deal in principle to lease the land to the club.

Oxford United must now apply to Cherwell District Council for planning permission.

The 16,000-seater stadium would include a hotel and a conference centre.

But the club said in a statement that it had changed the designs "in response to the consultation and will be releasing these soon".

"We are committed to delivering a new, modern, sustainable stadium which is a significant community landmark - this is about getting the right facility for everyone," the statement added.

Traffic congestion has been a major concern among some residents in nearby Kidlington, who said it would be "way worse" and affect them "massively".

David Robey, chair of Kidlington Parish Council, said that despite benefits to the village, "the short and medium term prospects of traffic congestion are really very frightening".

At a news conference at Stratfield Brake, Oxford United said that one way of dealing with matchday traffic would be to close the A4260.

Other options thought to be being considered include a bridge from the stadium complex, across the road towards Oxford Parkway railway station.

The club said submitting the application "at the earliest opportunity remains the focus of the club and project team".
