An inquest has opened into the death of a 15-year-old boy who collapsed on a school playing field in Shropshire.

Lewis Smith collapsed on Tuesday after a routine PE lesson at The Burton Borough School in Newport, council officials said.

Teachers tried to resuscitate him but he was later confirmed dead at Princess Royal Hospital in Telford.

The inquest was opened and adjourned to a date to be fixed, a spokesman for Telford & Wrekin coroner's office said.

Head teacher Dave Hill has described Lewis as a "lovely student" who will be missed by everyone at the school.
