Ludford Bridge to reopen to pedestrians after masonry fall

Shropshire Council said frost may have destabilised the ancient bridge

A bridge undergoing temporary repairs is due to reopen to pedestrians.

Ludford Bridge, in Ludlow, has been closed to traffic since masonry fell into the River Teme on 4 January and investigators are assessing the damage.

Pedestrian access was restricted at 0900 GMT for minor repairs and would be restored by 1530 GMT, but traffic was still banned, Shropshire Council said.

The bridge was the site of a famous battle during the War of the Roses in 1459.

Major repair work could start on the bridge at the end of February and was likely to take about two months, the authority added.
