Shropshire Council to lose 400 jobs in £80m cuts

One in three senior managers will lose their jobs at Shropshire Council as the authority aims to save £80m.

A total of 400 jobs will go as part of a savings package approved in a budget meeting on Thursday.

Overall, one in five management jobs will go as the authority claims to be tackling waste, bureaucracy and management costs.

Council leader Keith Barrow said the cuts "set out a clear path for more innovative ways to run local services."

'Natural wastage'

The management job cuts are meant to save a total of £4m.

Officials hope a similar saving can be achieved by changing staff terms and conditions. A consultation with staff has been launched.

A spokesman said it was hoped compulsory redundancies will be kept to a minimum, with "natural wastage" accounting for most job losses.

The Conservative-run council said it planned to protect frontline services. It employs 11,000 people, and has an annual budget of £630m.
