Shropshire projects get grants to tackle climate change

Community projects in Shropshire are being given £20,000 to help deal with the effects of climate change.

Examples of projects receiving grants from the council include funding for weather stations, community activities and energy efficient street lights.

Shropshire Council's sustainability team said awards were granted to schemes that had a community benefit.

The council said the funding would provide ways to help the county become more resilient to climate change.

Sustainability officer Ruth Hudson said: "It is essential that communities understand how they can help themselves prepare for future changes in climate.

"Shropshire is vulnerable to the effects of climate change and is likely to experience more extreme events. The recent flooding and cold periods demonstrate how vulnerable Shropshire is."
