Shrewsbury flood barriers removed as Severn level drops

River levels have begun to drop in Shrewsbury, the Environment Agency (EA) has said.

The River Severn reached a depth of 3.39m (11ft 2in) in the town on Friday. Typical levels range from 0.42m (1ft 5in) and 2.7m (8ft 10in).

Peak levels are expected to reach Ironbridge and Bridgnorth by Saturday afternoon, the EA added.

An EA spokeswoman said all Frankwell flood defences in Shrewsbury were being removed.

"We do not anticipate the need for any further deployment of flood defences over the next 48 hours," she said.

A flood alert remains in place for the rivers Teme and Severn throughout Shropshire.
