A train fan from Shropshire has spent £22,000 building his own railway line in his back garden.

Bill Barritt, 80, has spent three years building a train and installing 1.2 miles of track around 13 acres of land at his home near Bridgnorth.

The 25ft (7.5m) long eight-passenger train was imported from America.

He said: "You start building a little bit, then you think, I'll add a bit more, and then a bit more and so it goes on."

The grandfather said he used the train to transport his 12 grandchildren around his garden.

"It's something I've often thought I'd like to have and now being fairly old and fairly rich, I could afford it and so I built it," he said.

"It was suggested we should have a miniature railways in the house and I said 'that's no good'.

"If you are going to have a railway at all then then you have one you can sit on - it's an experience."
