Much Wenlock is seen as the birthplace of the modern Olympics

A Shropshire town that provided the inspiration for the modern Olympic movement has been celebrating its heritage.

Dozens of athletes taking part in the Wenlock Olympian Games, an event that dates back to 1850, have paraded through the centre of Much Wenlock.

The procession was led through the streets by a herald and a white pony.

The games, which began last Sunday, continue at venues across the county until 22 July.

The event is organised by the Wenlock Olympian Society which was founded by Dr William Penny Brookes.

Mr Brookes was a keen advocate of the benefits of physical education and is acknowledged as one of the fathers of the modern Olympics.

Baron Pierre de Coubertin founded the International Olympic Committee in 1894 after paying Mr Brookes a visit and witnessing the town's games.
