Plans for 285 homes in Newport set for approval

A controversial plan for 285 homes in a Shropshire town look set to be passed.
The proposals for the new homes on fields off Wellington Road, Newport, have been recommended for approval.
Nearly 500 objections have been lodged against the plan, including over the scale of the development and the fact it is a green-field site.
However, planners advised Telford and Wrekin Council to pass the plans as not enough affordable houses have been built in Newport over recent years.
The Labour-run council is expected to back the plans at a meeting later.
The planners' report also argued that green-field developments were "most likely" to meet the increasing need for affordable homes.
A project proposing 34 new homes are built off Maynard's Croft in the town have also been earmarked for approval.
The applications are among four which could lead to nearly 900 homes being built around Newport.
