A new £45m mental health centre has opened in Shropshire.

Steve Jones, chairman of South Staffordshire and Shropshire Healthcare Foundation NHS Trust officially opened the Redwoods Centre in Shrewsbury.

The project is part of a 50-year plan to modernise mental health care provision for people living in the county.

The 10-acre site, with four buildings containing 116 beds, is "bright and welcoming" the trust said.

Mr Jones said: "This has been 50 years in the planning and now finally we are here with a new centre, providing modern facilities which the people of Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin deserve."

The Redwoods Centre in Shrewsbury was completed £1m under the proposed £46m NHS budget.

The trust added that the new centre, on the site of the Victorian era Shelton Hospital, was "cutting edge and modern".
