Shrewbury's Catholic Cathedral is to apply for a government grant after its roof was damaged by recent bad weather.

Father Chris Matthews said the building had been affected by storms and was in need of repair.

Chancellor George Osborne announced in Thursday's Budget £20m would be made available toward the upkeep of the nation's cathedrals.

He said the buildings would act as important focal points for World War One centenary memorials.

Fr Matthews said the money would ensure the cathedral was properly maintained.

"It's about maintaining and continually improving the building for our many parishioners, but also for the many visitors and pilgrims that come to us from across the world", he said.
