Emergency services were called to Long Mynd at about 13:00 BST

A pilot was trapped in the wreckage of a glider for about 40 minutes after it flipped and crashed during take-off.

The man, in his 50s, was taken to Royal Shrewsbury Hospital with minor injuries after the crash at Long Mynd.

The ambulance service, which sent crews there at about 13:00 BST, said he was "extremely fortunate" not to have had "more serious or even fatal injuries".

The Midland Gliding Club, based at Long Mynd, said the aircraft belonged to its fleet but did not comment further.

West Mercia Police said air accident investigators had been informed of the crash.

An ambulance service spokeswoman said: "It was reported that the glider, which was being towed approximately 100-200 feet in the air, plummeted to the ground before skidding and overturning on to its roof.

"Crews worked closely with the fire service and staff from the gliding club to safely extricate the pilot from the aircraft."
