Telford bus driver praised for going out of way to get boy home

A bus driver has been praised for going out of his way to help a schoolboy who got on the wrong bus in Telford.

Eleven-year-old Codey did not realise his error until he was almost in Bridgnorth, about 13 miles (21km) away, and his phone battery was running out.

However, driver Domingos Correia took him back to Telford - more than 10 miles (16km) out of his way.

Mr Correia said he was just doing his job and that such a mistake was fairly common.

'The right thing'

The youngster was said to be very anxious and worried he did not have enough battery left to reach his mother on the phone after boarding the wrong vehicle on 7 November.

Mr Correia, who has worked for Arriva for six years, was praised by his boss Andy Damon for his kind actions.

"We're really proud of what Domingos did that day," said Mr Damon.

"He's a great asset to Arriva because he lives our values about doing the right thing, caring passionately about what we do and making a difference."

Mr Correia said: "Lots of youngsters make the mistake and get on the wrong bus without looking - I'm sure I did that myself as a kid - but there's no way I'd leave a youngster by themselves when they're lost."
