The 'self-combusting tea towels' caused a small fire, closing the school, the fire service said

A small fire that closed a school was caused by tea towels that had self-combusted, a fire service said.

Shropshire Fire and Rescue said it was called to Woodside Primary School in Oswestry at 05:50 GMT.

The tea towels had been through the tumble drier and folded before bursting into flames, the service posted on X, external, formerly Twitter.

It issued a warning about drying towels that had been "used for substances like cooking oil".

Crews put out the blaze using dry powder extinguisher, a spokesperson said.

The school, which provides hot meals to Selatyn and Trefonen Primary Schools, is set to re-open on Friday.
