There are 21 schools in the first phase of the council's programme

More than 20 Shropshire schools are set to have 20mph speed limits placed outside them next year.

Shropshire Council initially approved the speed restriction in 2020, subject to where existing highway conditions made it appropriate to do so.

Following the collection of data a year later, 21 sites are to be included in the programme's first phase.

The council said safety of children was paramount.

"A great deal of work has taken place over the past two years and I'm really pleased that we'll soon be starting detailed engagement with the schools identified through this work," said Kirstie Hurst-Knight, cabinet member for children and education.

The schools include:

  • Idsall School, Shifnal

  • The Grove School, Market Drayton

  • Sir John Talbot's School, Whitchurch

  • The Thomas Adams School, Wem

  • The Lacon Childe School, Cleobury Mortimer

  • Barrow 1618 CofE Primary Free School

  • Stoke-On-Tern Primary School, Stoke Heath

  • Long Mountain CofE Primary School, Worthen

  • Lower Heath CofE Primary School

  • Minsterley Primary School, Minsterley

  • Longden Primary School

  • William Brookes School, Much Wenlock

  • Lakelands Academy, Ellesmere

  • Market Drayton Junior School

  • Buildwas Academy, Buildwas

  • The Community College, Bishops Castle

  • Welshampton CofE Primary School

  • St Martins 3-16 Community School

  • Ellesmere Primary School

  • Norbury Primary School

  • Holy Trinity CofE Primary Academy, Oswestry

The council said the list may change as work progressed, with other schools in the county to be included in future phases.

It added a design and delivery plan had been developed on which the schools would be consulted.
