Hearse catches fire while carrying coffin in Church Stretton

The coffin was taken out of the hearse before it became involved

A hearse carrying a coffin has caught fire on the way to a funeral.

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service said crews were called to Sandford Avenue in Church Stretton just before 13:20 GMT on Monday.

Members of the public helped rescue the coffin before it was set alight, it added.

In a post on social media, Church Stretton Fire Station said it would have been a sad enough day for the family even before the fire.
