A Shropshire pub landlady is expecting to prepare dozens of Christmas dinners this year for struggling families and vulnerable people.

Cathy Haddock began the tradition in the Covid pandemic when she took over the Coracle Inn, Shrewsbury.

About 70 meals were prepared last Christmas and Ms Haddock said she was expecting a higher number this year in the cost-of-living crisis.

"Everyone deserves a Christmas dinner," she said.

The meals were not solely for the homeless or those struggling financially, Ms Haddock said.

"People who are on their own, families who can't afford to do a Christmas dinner, if they have to choose between a dinner and buying their child a present. Just people who need it, who want it," she added.

Carers have been in touch with the pub about getting food for their clients and will deliver them on Christmas Eve while several taxi drivers have also volunteered to deliver others for free.

With more than 50 orders already placed, the landlady, who is also head chef, and her dedicated team say they are gearing up for a busy Christmas Eve preparing them.

People have also been going to the pub and offering cash donations while Ms Haddock had set up a fundraising page with all proceeds going to the Salvation Army.

"I hope everyone has a happy and safe Christmas. If they need anything, send us a message or a text, we're here to help," she added.
