A public consultation has started for improvements to the gyratory outside Shrewsbury railway station.

More walking and cycle routes are planned for Castle Gates, Chester Street and Smithfield Road under the plans by Shropshire Council.

Wider pavements and a new 20mph speed limit are also among the proposals.

Dan Morris, cabinet member for highways, said it would "improve public safety and celebrate the local character of our historic town centre".

The scheme received Levelling Up Funding as part of the Big Town Plan Partnership., external

The gyratory system is regularly congested at peak hours.

Shropshire Council is also proposing new crossings and benches to reduce traffic and add a footpath along the southern edge of Cross Street to make it a safer route for pedestrians.

There will also be two new cycle routes with active travel corridors along Castle Foregate and Castle Street.

Key junctions and access routes into and out of the station gyratory area will also be improved.

The consultation will last until 5 March and can be accessed online, external or at St Mary's Church from Thursday.
