The family of a soldier from Somerset who died in Afghanistan have commissioned a special memorial.

Cpl Tom Gaden, 24, of 1st Battalion The Rifles, based in Gloucestershire, was killed by an explosion in Helmand in February 2009.

The memorial glass panel in St Mary Magdalene Church, Taunton, was paid for by donations from people in the town.

Cpl Gaden's mother Judy said she wanted a memorial not just to her son but to others killed in the conflict.

She said: "It's quite appropriate it's in the Somerset Light Infantry part of the church in the small prayer chapel which is open all the time the church is open.

"I like the fact that it's in the town centre, in the church that was used for his funeral."

Cpl Gaden, from Taunton, L/Cpl Paul Upton from Cornwall and Rifleman Jamie Gunn, from south Wales died when a bomb struck their Land Rover on 25 February 2009.
