Firemen rescue alpaca from Somerset ditch

Firemen have rescued an alpaca that got stuck in a ditch near Burnham-on-Sea.

The animal, belonging to a smallholding in Tarnock, was unhurt but visibly shaken by the experience.

Firefighter Bob Salway said: "After 33 years in the fire and rescue, that's the first alpaca we've retrieved from a water-filled ditch."

Owner Carolyn Allen said she had not had the alpaca for long and would be putting up a fence to stop the animal getting stuck again.

She said she found the alpaca in the ditch when she went out to feed it on Wednesday morning.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service took about half-an-hour to complete the rescue.
