Somerset County Council has announced that a record 19,000 potholes have so far been filled this year.
The authority said it had deployed 32 dedicated teams to deal with the road damage caused by extremely bad weather during the winter.
The number of repairs is likely to reach 23,000 by the end of the year, 5,000 more than the total in 2009.
Councillor Anthony Trollope-Bellew said improving Somerset's roads was one of the council's main priorities.
