Marines from 40 Commando receive campaign medals

The Duke of Edinburgh handed out some of the medals to marines.

Royal Marines from 40 Commando in Somerset have received medals for their six-month tour of duty in Afghanistan.

The Duke of Edinburgh also gave the Elizabeth Cross to the families of the 14 marines who lost their lives.

Commanding officer Lt Col Paul James said: "There is an element of sadness for those families who we weren't able to bring back their sons or their husbands, and also to see the injured."

The ceremony was held at Norton Manor Camp near Taunton.

Around 2,000 people, all friends and relatives of the marines attended the ceremony.

Marine Stuart Cox said: "It's been a really great day, a mixture of pride and sadness. I'm happy to be back but obviously you feel for the families whose lads didn't come home."

About 40% of the unit have already received their campaign medals for having previously served in Afghanistan.

A 40 Commando homecoming parade is set to take place in Taunton on Wednesday.
