Smallest district council could close over cuts

The leader of the smallest district council in England has said it will collapse unless it receives extra help from the government.

West Somerset Council leader Tim Taylor said the settlement from government was "shocking" and a "huge hit".

The council's grants have been reduced by £600,000 (17%), however when council tax is included this goes down to a 9% cut to their overall spending power.

It is considering cutting management and partially closing toilets.

The Conservative controlled authority is also looking at increasing car park charges and slashing its arts fund.

Mr Taylor said: "If we do not get consideration and help and advice from the government, then we may have to declare publicly that we are no longer viable."
