Shepton Mallet prisoner found dead in cell

A 40-year-old man who was serving a life sentence for attempted murder was found dead in his cell at Shepton Mallet Prison, it has emerged.

Prison officers found Michael Ransdell hanged in his cell, early on Sunday morning.

It is understood he was not on suicide watch.

A Prison Service spokesman said: "As with all deaths in custody, the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman will conduct an investigation."
