Somerset County Council plans to cut mobile libraries

More than 200 Somerset communities would no longer be visited by mobile libraries under county council plans.

The council aims to save 25% - £1.35m - of the library budget and plans would see vehicles cut from six to two.

The four vehicles selected for closure run from Minehead, Bridgwater, Taunton and Wells.

The decision will be made by Conservative councillor Christine Lawrence, the person in charge of libraries, on 15 June.

If approved, the plans would see the number of communities visited by the mobile libraries halved, with 206 places no longer included.

Those which remain would have less frequent visits.

New routes for the remaining two mobile units would also be introduced, which would come into force in August.

Somerset County Council said it has prioritised communities more than three miles from a library, where the stop serves three or more people, and where they serve pre-school groups, elderly and housebound people.
