Steiner Academy Frome free school has building delays

The Steiner Academy Frome will move to the Park Road site in Frome in about 18 months' time

Somerset's first free school is due to open at a temporary site in Wiltshire after delays in getting the planned site in Frome ready for use.

Steiner Academy Frome was due to open at the old hospital site near Victoria Park in Frome in September.

Guy Marson, lead proposer, said: "The kids would be in the middle of a building site, it's not suitable."

The school will be based at the Corsley Centre for reception-year pupils to Year Four for up to 18 months.

"This is just temporary accommodation so we would still be measuring the catchment area from the school gates of the proposed site in Park Road, Frome.

Because of the school's status the admissions will be managed by the school rather than Somerset County Council.

"Unfortunately the timetable we're given as part of the free school's programme is so tight.

"You're given 11 months from notification of approval to opening that very few free schools get up and opening unless they are in existing school buildings, so it's quite common there is some form of temporary accommodation."

Two drop-in meetings will held on 17 April at Frome Library and 20 April at Corsley Centre so parents can share their views about the proposed move.

The consultation will finish on 2 May.
