Flooded A361 road in Somerset Levels remains partly closed

Motorists have been warned not to drive through the flooded stretch of the A361 across the levels

A section of the A361 in Somerset could remain closed until next week because of flooding, a council has said.

The road is impassable between East Lyng and the Somerset Levels Basket and Craft Centre at Burrowbridge because of flooding.

Motorists have been advised not to try to drive through this section as the depth of water is not known.

It is because floodwater from the drainage ditches on either side of the A361 have flowed on to the carriageway.

The A361 is a popular commuter route between Taunton and Glastonbury.

A spokesman for Somerset County Council said: "We are hearing reports that lorries and four-wheel drive vehicles are driving through the flood and we strongly advise against this.

Coastal flooding

"The level of the water is unknown and this is very dangerous as vehicles can be carried away or into rhynes (drainage ditches)."

The River Parrett which runs through the Somerset Levels is also near the flooded stretch of road.

County council officials said the road would remain closed until at least Saturday and may not reopen until Tuesday.

The council is also monitoring the A372 between Othery and Langport because of high water levels nearby.

One flood warning is in place in Somerset for the River Tone at Currymoor and Haymoor.

The Environment Agency has also said flooding is possible along the Somerset coast in the coming days as a high spring tide is expected.

Although the flood water has affected the Somerset Levels, repair work to the partially collapsed river wall in Bridgwater is continuing.

The county council has said engineers have been able to work on the higher sections of the wall.
