Bath and North East Somerset toilets sold or closed

Proposals have been made to sell off or close 13 public toilets in and around Bath.

Bath and North East Somerset Council owns 27 loos but has said the proposals could save £120,000 a year.

Lib Dem cabinet member David Dixon said: "We've got a number earmarked for closure - it's where facilities already exist or can be transferred over."

The opposition has said more transparency is needed with the budget in order to prove the case for closure.

Thirteen of the facilities in Bath, Keynsham and Saltford will be kept open and refurbished from April 2013.

The council has said seven toilets in Midsomer Norton, Peasedown St John and Keynsham will either be sold or transferred to a community group or parish councils.

The hope is that the remaining six will be looked after by community groups or local shops.

Tony Clarke, Conservative deputy group leader, said: "It might be necessary but we want some evidence.

"When this administration came into power last May, we were promised transparency and, as has often proven the case, we haven't had that transparency."

A public consultation will be held before a final decision is made.
