Chew Stoke meeting to discuss flood prevention

A meeting has been held in a Somerset village hit by flooding to discuss how to prevent it happening again.

Recent torrential rain caused considerable damage in Chew Stoke and led to the death of a man whose vehicle became submerged in flood water.

The Environment Agency and Bristol Water were invited to attend the meeting hosted by the parish council.

Chew Valley councillor Liz Richardson said: "We've got to look at ways we can improve safety in the area."

Mrs Richardson said some houses in the area had been flooded up to four times recently and something had to be done to prevent further damage.

She said: "It's one of these freak occurrences, and I do understand that, but it's 2012 and there are things that can be looked at to minimise the effect of the floods."
