Tarr Steps bridge rebuild starts to repair flood damage

Work has begun to rebuild an old bridge on Exmoor which was hit by floods last year.

The large stones that make up the 50m-wide Tarr Steps crossing were washed away as river levels rose.

Engineers from Somerset County Council have been assessing how to restore the famous landmark.

The stone slabs have to be retrieved before rebuilding can begin and the work is expected to take about a week to complete.

The exact age of the bridge is unknown, with several theories claiming Tarr Steps date from the Bronze Age, while others date them to about 1400 AD.
