The kitten hitched its ride in the council van on Wednesday

A small black kitten has survived a 20 mile journey across Somerset in the wheel-arch of a council van.

It is thought the animal boarded the van at South Somerset District Council's depot in Yeovil and was later found when the van arrived in Bruton.

Attempts to return the female kitten, estimated to be about 10 weeks old, have so far proved fruitless.

A council spokesman said it hoped the kitten's owner would come forward to claim their pet.

"We think the kitten hitched the ride from our Lufton Depot on Artillery Road in Yeovil on Wednesday," he said.

"We really hope the owner comes forward so that it can be back at home after its traumatic ride."
