Children's centres in Taunton declared 'inadequate' by Ofsted

Four children's centres in Taunton have been declared inadequate by Ofsted.

The report follows an inspection at Acorns, Hillside, The Hollies and Brock House children's centres, which are all managed by Somerset County Council.

It found children were not well prepared for school, the authority failed to identify weaknesses in leadership and not enough families were making use of services.

The council said it was taking action to "put things right".

The centres offer a range of services for children and their families including childcare, advice on parenting and healthy lifestyles and help for parents to find work.

Frances Nicholson, cabinet member for children's services, said: "We accept this disappointing report and are taking action to put things right.

"The wellbeing of children is an absolute priority for this authority."

A separate day nursery at Brock House, which is not run by the council, has been rated as outstanding by Ofsted.
