Yeovil Town's Huish Park new revamp plans revealed

The club has said the new plans are more balanced with smaller shops

Yeovil Town Football Club have revealed new plans to develop land next to their stadium after withdrawing a planning application last year.

Plans for a superstore sparked concerns from South Somerset District Council over traffic and loss of green space.

Smaller units, including sports injury clinics, a hair salon, hotel and more green space are part of the new design.

Yeovil Town chairman John Fry said the plans were "far more balanced" and would raise much-needed funds.

'Quite exciting'

The 25-acre (10 hectare) site being considered is next to the north stand at the club's Huish Park ground.

Yeovil Town, currently in League One, want to raise capital to modernise facilities and build an all-seater stand.

Mr Fry said: "I refer to it as a derelict piece of ground. It's never been used for the purpose for which it was established.

"I know it's open space but we've got a better idea to put it into good use and be able to raise the capital that is required to develop the club, and also produce the secondary spending that is spent on the team itself."

South Somerset District Council said it would have 13 weeks to consider how well the new plans fit in with national and local planning policy.

Liberal Democrat council leader Ric Pallister said elements of the new plans were "quite exciting".

He said: "The committee and the planning officers have got something they can get their teeth into, whereas last time round, we were facing that massive retail store which flew in the face of national and local policy."

The club is also running a series of public feedback sessions at Huish Park as well as online.
