An investigation into the cause of a major blaze at a landfill site in Somerset is under way.

Firefighters were called to the Virador site at Dimmer on Saturday afternoon and 11 crews spent most of the night bringing it under control.

Two crews remained on the site overnight and earlier covered the remaining hot spots with soil.

A Virador spokeswoman said it would be examining records of what had recently been dumped at the site.

"Viridor's UK compliance team will work in due course with colleagues from the Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service and the Environment Agency to undertake a review of the causes of the fire."

She added the site manages non-hazardous domestic and trade waste and at no point was there any risk to public health.

The site reopened to the public earlier.
