Wellington Monument's 400 trees to be cut down
- Published
Hundreds of trees are to be cut down near a well known Somerset landmark to open up views from its hilltop spot.
The National Trust says it is taking action after residents said the trees at Wellington Monument obscured views to Exmoor and the Quantock Hills.
A spokesman said the larger, more significant trees would be left to help wildlife and retain a woodland feel.
The work is part of a revamp which includes lighting the monument for special occasions and improved signage.
Tree felling begins on 5 October and is expected to take a month to complete.
