Brean beach management to be taken over by council
- Published
Management of Brean beach is to be taken over by the district council in April, it has been announced.
Sedgemoor District Council will take over responsibility for beach operations from Brean Parish Council.
An RNLI report had asked for the parish to improve safety, including better signs and more staff.
But the parish council felt it was unable to meet those recommendations, "due to their limited capacity as volunteers".
The beach has attracted record numbers of visitors during the pandemic but this had led to concerns from local residents about anti-social behaviour.
Sedgemoor District Council already operates Burnham-on-Sea and Berrow beaches, with support from the RNLI during peak season.
The authority is to invest £75,000 in staffing, equipment, signage and beach cleaning.
A further £10,000 will be spent to refurbish a toilet block.
