A lorry carrying cider barrels has burst into flames on the M5 motorway in Somerset.

The Weston Ciders vehicle caught fire between junction 20 and junction 19 near Clevedon at about 13:30 BST and closed the northbound carriageway.

Avon and Somerset Police said the road remained partially closed and was causing long delays.

Highways South West said the lorry driver had escaped unhurt and warned motorists to expect disruption.

At one point there were nearly nine miles (14.5km) of tailbacks from the scene, adding at least an hour to journey times.

The closure was reduced to one lane at about 18:15 BST and Highways England said it would remain that way overnight to allow for resurfacing work.
