A pedestrian has died after a crash involving a lorry on the M5, police have said.
Devon and Cornwall Police said the crash happened near Tiverton on the Devon and Somerset border at about 05:30 BST.
The male pedestrian died at the scene, police said.
The force said the northbound carriageway would remain closed for most of the day while an investigation takes place.
National Highways said it reopened the southbound carriageway at about 10:30 after it was closed following the crash.
However, the authority warned there were significant delays in both directions with tailbacks of at least 45 minutes.
Diversions are in place in the northbound carriageway between junction 26 for Chelston and junction 27 for Tiverton Parkway, National Highways said.
Drivers have been advised to allow extra time to travel.
"You may wish to re-route or even delay your journey," National Highways advised.
Police said the deceased man's next of kin had been informed.
