A driver has suffered serious injuries in a crash which occurred after police had indicated for him to stop.

A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Police said the driver lost control following a pursuit through Weston-super-Mare on Thursday at 18:45 GMT.

The vehicle had travelled along Walliscote Road and the A370 Beach Road before it caught the edge of a traffic island and hit a wall, police said.

The force is appealing for witnesses to come forward.

Officers in an unmarked police car spotted the black Audi A3 speeding through traffic over Hildesheim Bridge but the driver failed to stop when police used lights and sirens to try to pull the vehicle over, the spokesperson said.

The driver was taken to hospital for treatment and remains in a serious condition.
